A couple of months ago I joined the ranks of people all over the world who are experimenting (and becoming addicted to) Pour Painting. These are the only ones I have done so far, but I am hosting a Pour Party on Sunday and we will pour lots of paint and also a bit of wine (the latter not on the canvases!) Hopefully <a href="https://www.LouisvilleCalligraphy.com">Louisville Calligraphy</a> will have more photos to add to this post next week.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-29476497411990441192017-08-09T15:44:00.000-04:002017-08-09T15:44:16.388-04:00Not your typical flourish by Louisville Calligraphy<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJiRq72GlLVNifP4FjV2m7R0RiJ_qWqDGZrbNoLLnAKvTMy2ZhmWSI69VpQdSMb_3p-OMLYBYM4h8OJTaD4XXLcrejSv5lxIv_MugfKS4eJjtYbnrK0Nqow0aWkoM_fy7WSLpoQDy0XhE/s1600/CatherineFlourish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJiRq72GlLVNifP4FjV2m7R0RiJ_qWqDGZrbNoLLnAKvTMy2ZhmWSI69VpQdSMb_3p-OMLYBYM4h8OJTaD4XXLcrejSv5lxIv_MugfKS4eJjtYbnrK0Nqow0aWkoM_fy7WSLpoQDy0XhE/s320/CatherineFlourish.jpg" width="320" height="320" data-original-width="1440" data-original-height="1440" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9L_vJVE0Js17vIQ0-YB1gMwh31Lu-VbDFQct48DM1d2KEJy_mQFbNk6dXlU0S2iZdEStVtgRg3TE1Vfkw7DHwNo_MxFodxz5ZrC6jhHXR0od-rVMsf3FfvnRM-4mZzoYZfMTNydxJatQ/s1600/AnneFlourish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9L_vJVE0Js17vIQ0-YB1gMwh31Lu-VbDFQct48DM1d2KEJy_mQFbNk6dXlU0S2iZdEStVtgRg3TE1Vfkw7DHwNo_MxFodxz5ZrC6jhHXR0od-rVMsf3FfvnRM-4mZzoYZfMTNydxJatQ/s320/AnneFlourish.jpg" width="320" height="240" data-original-width="1440" data-original-height="1080" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjByXomB1-z12RG4A7b_QPvo17vw8CG3cktHpK25rEuYfc9_k19E5Z6tpl0mDFelF5If2vGfWosIEUrrTBeyOqd7ZVmrShfOiC87jBV5bllwNzJwbJ3ptK0MsSyh9B673bKHKP7p7n4edU/s1600/DonnaFlourish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjByXomB1-z12RG4A7b_QPvo17vw8CG3cktHpK25rEuYfc9_k19E5Z6tpl0mDFelF5If2vGfWosIEUrrTBeyOqd7ZVmrShfOiC87jBV5bllwNzJwbJ3ptK0MsSyh9B673bKHKP7p7n4edU/s320/DonnaFlourish.jpg" width="320" height="240" data-original-width="1440" data-original-height="1080" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghvkg2Ucn2IM9krf8CRyNXGoC-xiCW-4iqk7GWxMTPCK5NejvAz5IKv0KjmRkQx0WjWz1JCwlDcf-E6f2qWhmVYDBH3it9zPohtOhmjsdDWzafET0Tm8CHC7KV6MVoPAZ_kDJnQz5YW4k/s1600/LibbyBrianFlourish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghvkg2Ucn2IM9krf8CRyNXGoC-xiCW-4iqk7GWxMTPCK5NejvAz5IKv0KjmRkQx0WjWz1JCwlDcf-E6f2qWhmVYDBH3it9zPohtOhmjsdDWzafET0Tm8CHC7KV6MVoPAZ_kDJnQz5YW4k/s320/LibbyBrianFlourish.jpg" width="320" height="320" data-original-width="1440" data-original-height="1440" /></a></div>
These samples are not your typical flourish says <a href="https://www.LouisvilleCalligraphy.com">Louisville Calligraphy</a>. I recently took an online flourishing class and these were a few of my examples. They need more practice, but they are fun.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-49766647742796439912016-09-16T13:04:00.001-04:002016-09-16T13:19:11.479-04:00Fun at Silica Ceramic Studio, Jeffersonville IndianaI have had some fun for a few years now at Silica Ceramic Studio, Jeffersonville Indiana. One of my favorite things (so much so that I did it twice!) was making hand built roses. My painting and glazing left something to be desired and I hope to go back to correct what I don't like. The building of them, and their intricacy, however is both demanding and satisfying.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcwAyI82KKpAeC8HCdZlmfrnQsngtBWWtecERVbRMPMW1Gk062OQSP7Re8kVJw4_37FlYKxvCeLBgOtIsCTndDpDGzCNF1-ZVHw0hxS-k0noE90jnYOpTqC-Y3jCgEaDIRleVMQVV_yqE/s1600/WhiteRose.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcwAyI82KKpAeC8HCdZlmfrnQsngtBWWtecERVbRMPMW1Gk062OQSP7Re8kVJw4_37FlYKxvCeLBgOtIsCTndDpDGzCNF1-ZVHw0hxS-k0noE90jnYOpTqC-Y3jCgEaDIRleVMQVV_yqE/s320/WhiteRose.jpg" width="320" height="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7af2dAYA59W3KZO9MIvhXf5Z8KnQnj3271Z9OZbeaa8N1bgm4PY1HhYg7uNqkCwR5JgzjYjDFekEkNkcI5dzIYmVrnyn1jhAShE-HKNQLHF2VavcfYukG1rXHHaEJu5NATIkyfm0_ZFI/s1600/WhiteRoseDetail.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7af2dAYA59W3KZO9MIvhXf5Z8KnQnj3271Z9OZbeaa8N1bgm4PY1HhYg7uNqkCwR5JgzjYjDFekEkNkcI5dzIYmVrnyn1jhAShE-HKNQLHF2VavcfYukG1rXHHaEJu5NATIkyfm0_ZFI/s320/WhiteRoseDetail.jpg" width="320" height="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYFeesdB2i9RYDSQuY8iFe9GbzuvWIzj0_ZowMhI8GKhkhNeUwdgFSeixcJIGquD0t1ybpf04HWeLQJ4NxyBac0ipVUma0ROOtnmQILoFi00GESeMi5Bv5XgEwMdhRB6LbHPvo3PgaEeE/s1600/YellowRose.jpg" imageanchor="1" >

Other things I have done at Silica are these little bird dishes and a fish tile. I painted some measuring bowls for Sandy in yummy spicy colors, and most recently, Laura and I hand built magnificent clay vases. Large! We plan to go paint or glaze them as soon as our schedules realign.

Crazy health issues, crazy busy with wedding work, and simply very little time to catch my breath, much less sit down at the computer and blog. Even my <a href="http://www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com">wedding blog</a> took a backseat to all else. My <a href="http://www.Facebook.com/louisvillecalligraphy">Facebook page </a>was pretty busy. I did manage to keep that up better.
One of my last posts here showcased a few small paintings I made to sell at a Louisville gallery. They all three sold at the same time - I'm guessing to one person. Hurray! I must try to do more. Several of my small pieces at <a href="http://www.Facebook.com/CopperMoonGallery">Copper Moon Gallery</a> also sold in 2015.
I hope to do a better job in 2016, but can't guarantee anything. But - it is January and I will post something new now. First is a page for a bride and groom's album for their first anniversary (paper). The mother wanted something stylized that included the burgundy calla lilies in the wedding bouquet.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu0YhbQKdM35r8zdxPqAoZAcHLWY2zuMEoDwdEESR_n_RooOUVQGHn7H12FxfV-BRtqiO6LM1z2PxAyjWFrIPaPaPB2zaeZj2YotZK5qTV0LWUVXP_OttMUKfqoLZd3TO8fgXpT3ZxCpA/s1600/BKCalla2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu0YhbQKdM35r8zdxPqAoZAcHLWY2zuMEoDwdEESR_n_RooOUVQGHn7H12FxfV-BRtqiO6LM1z2PxAyjWFrIPaPaPB2zaeZj2YotZK5qTV0LWUVXP_OttMUKfqoLZd3TO8fgXpT3ZxCpA/s400/BKCalla2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div></div>
Next is a set of script table numbers. I was given a sample from Pinterest with lots of flourishing as inspiration.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj9W37tE1AdyNkLXTCScz6EidlO99_6kU1Jr9Pmp7E7cM6KuXpXW_SqpmDJbW5r7XzIRkbnm0zqHklMOfOlYRF0KyfJAyiC4r5jA23L-cM9DUk93x90s0XW5yo7b6pRsyRMtGSpEa5Teo/s1600/ScriptNumbers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj9W37tE1AdyNkLXTCScz6EidlO99_6kU1Jr9Pmp7E7cM6KuXpXW_SqpmDJbW5r7XzIRkbnm0zqHklMOfOlYRF0KyfJAyiC4r5jA23L-cM9DUk93x90s0XW5yo7b6pRsyRMtGSpEa5Teo/s400/ScriptNumbers.jpg" /></a></div>

Last is the original page that was planned for The Scout Guide/Louisville. The photos were taken in my studio just in time for the December 2014 first issue celebration. The photos were reformatted and the world didn't get to see my face, but did see much more of my calligraphy. I even ran into a childhood friend a few weeks ago who mentioned that she had seen my work in the Scout Guide.

I'll try to do something fun (for my own sanity and to create a blogpost about) on a more regular basis in 2016, but no promises.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-84930660199175059922015-09-12T12:08:00.000-04:002015-09-12T12:15:08.397-04:00Revisiting Old Blog PostsI spent a few minutes today revisiting old blog posts and came across <a href="http://letterladysletters.blogspot.com.es/2012/05/so-many-lessons-to-be-learned.html">this one</a> about my experience with gestural lettering in an <a href="https://yvesleterme.wordpress.com">Yves Leterme</a> workshop. It brought back great memories of good times with good art friends. Similarly, I am at this time dealing with the hubs' health issues - but someone else is cutting the grass these days. Plus ce la meme chose, plus ca change. (Minus the French grammatical markings.) The more things change, the more they remain the same. Speaking of remaining the same, I am at the same (lack of) talent level with the gestural writing. Hardly a moment spent on practice from then to now. It's a busy life.

I had fun painting these and am looking forward to painting a few more.

I made this book and book box earlier this year, and have been itching to make more of them. This was sent to a friend in Italy who had sent me a luscious gift of tea. It was fun to find the teacup brad to use as a fastener. Maybe when the second wave of wedding seasons is over I will have time to make a few more little books with boxes. (Did you know that October is the next June? Brides who don't plan June weddings seem to be choosing October, perhaps because of the weather.) <br></br><br></br>Here is the front of the book box.

Some were simply matted, others were matted and framed in white-washed frames. They are small, 5x7" and 8x10", for easy gifting. My favorite is a quote from designer Nate Berkus with a house illustration. Naturally, that's the one I forgot to photograph. The lettering style is a contemporary-feeling pressurized pointed pen lettering with a casual look. Wedding work season has started now, but I will try to fit in more small pieces in the lulls. I find if I have quotes mulling around in my mind and watercolor paper cut to size, it's more of an incentive to put spare time to good use.</div>

I used to do a lot of it, mostly paper collage, then I switched to mostly digital collage, and now do a little mixed media collage. But for 2014, I think one of my resolutions will be to get back to some paper collage. It's a great way to blend texture, color and even lettering. Here are a few of my paper collages from years past. You may see more examples of various art I do on <a href="http://www.louisvillecalligraphy.com/" target="_blank">my website</a>.<br />
<br />
This one incorporates a Nietsche quote in black letter calligraphy. To get the red lettering to show up on the black paper I first lettered in red to no avail. I lettered over it with white, then again with red. Tediously exacting, but worth it. I could have sold it about 7 times at Art in Speed Park the year I made it, but a couple bought it and left it at my booth while they shopped so others seeing it were disappointed. I still love it. I hope they do too!<br /><a data-pin-config="above" href="//pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fkentbrew%2F6851755809%2F&media=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7027%2F6851755809_df5b2051c9_z.jpg&description=Next%20stop%3A%20Pinterest" data-pin-do="buttonPin" ><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pin_it_button.png" /></a>

Here's one from a couple of years ago, made as a birthday card. Papers were painted and lettered, cut to shape and glued on flat. Details were added in colored pencil. I used to do a lot of torn and cut paper funky bird collages, but made no photos to document them. I want to make more! <br /><a data-pin-config="above" href="//pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fkentbrew%2F6851755809%2F&media=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7027%2F6851755809_df5b2051c9_z.jpg&description=Next%20stop%3A%20Pinterest" data-pin-do="buttonPin" ><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pin_it_button.png" /></a>

2014 for me will at least partially be ' The Year of Collage' - or at least the year I revisit collage. Of course, I will still mostly do my <a href="http://www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">wedding calligraphy</a>!<br />

It's the third successful workshop I've been a part of in just two months, coming on the heels of workshops by <a href="http://www.bonnie-stahlecker.com/" target="_blank">Bonnie Stahlecker</a> and <a href="http://www.typerror.com/" target="_blank">Michael Clark</a>. Jacqueline taught acrylic painting with calligraphy on canvas. The goal was to integrate the lettering into the painting. I have done this successfully on my own many times, but in this workshop piece my lettering is still sort of sitting on top. I'll work on it some more, but I like the direction it's going.<br />

Jacqueline may be teaching the journal portion of our class at the International Calligraphy Conference next summer. She is an excellent and generous instructor who continually educates herself in order to give the best to her students. Upon leaving Louisville, she was heading to New Orleans to become a Golden art products certified instructor. She's been using and sharing her knowledge of Golden products for years, and is now making it official.<br />
<br />
Excellent class, excellent people. I love the calligraphic community!<br />

Scribes from seven states attended the privately sponsored workshop which was a version of his "Beyond the Poem" class. There was a lot packed in to the 2 days, and as Michael explained to me, 'this is a thinking workshop'. Design considerations were paramount, lettering next - camaraderie and kindness, constant.<br />
<br />
This is the lucky group which participated, happy smiles all around:<br />

Besides the signs, I lettered envelopes for the wedding and a party, all the place cards, and created a one of a kind guest book, the pages of which were made from the same envelopes used for the wedding.<br />

Here is detail from the Bridal Suite sign. I embellished the signature blue lettering with silver.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh26yuSgo6Q1ouiwyUd9pYgBpwyD1vZm4QF7AJdCiZBP_0tqJ0tvSkspiihGJSS3AaIDwNBep9y7tVznjsc_v2I9n62bW5VaEtc4Jm4UpY2zkQ8YhuYIbruGSw13o7arRIG4UinDEC1Trw/s1600/SignBridal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh26yuSgo6Q1ouiwyUd9pYgBpwyD1vZm4QF7AJdCiZBP_0tqJ0tvSkspiihGJSS3AaIDwNBep9y7tVznjsc_v2I9n62bW5VaEtc4Jm4UpY2zkQ8YhuYIbruGSw13o7arRIG4UinDEC1Trw/s320/SignBridal.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /> This may have been the most unusual signage of the event. "Mama's
Soap Box" was the bride's idea. Her mother climbed atop the
sign-covered ottoman to welcome guests to the reception.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNxrXdnPB-VfdkVentIWMkJnmLsjWobF9FC9GYJNJhYhn2jxKxB717YnKQrFDDo3NtrjdNfa2T_Z7jjW2Lzt9fJ-OWbMyEH3jRnie-_FC9hwfr_-xvllIemPwv_KVMwQZBfxoLSO6V6VU/s1600/Signsfirstattempt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNxrXdnPB-VfdkVentIWMkJnmLsjWobF9FC9GYJNJhYhn2jxKxB717YnKQrFDDo3NtrjdNfa2T_Z7jjW2Lzt9fJ-OWbMyEH3jRnie-_FC9hwfr_-xvllIemPwv_KVMwQZBfxoLSO6V6VU/s320/Signsfirstattempt.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
My first iteration of the soap box was unsatisfactory to me, so I took it back to the drawing board and placed the signs on watercolor paper all around the ottoman. I worried about 'Mom' tripping and covered the top with felt and then a rug. It all worked out very well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The guest book wasn't just my favorite part, but also the bride's mother's. She was near tears when she saw it and held it for the first time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The guest book's inside covers were made of paste paper that I had painted covered with a rayon paper complete with glittery specks of gold and silver.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRjEiCvr5stZCMBBhsCOFRoeIzTg2l7iYuhylMu2rHWGj-5OZeAjX7Rs80SqDfcA8WdbUXqJRGjvpGlV1FEVKDQsVYbxazvr3Gh9NQp5TVq6_uV9AHn6V7mxT-O3NiJzBzT-8IjEgrSvA/s1600/SherlockplaceCards.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRjEiCvr5stZCMBBhsCOFRoeIzTg2l7iYuhylMu2rHWGj-5OZeAjX7Rs80SqDfcA8WdbUXqJRGjvpGlV1FEVKDQsVYbxazvr3Gh9NQp5TVq6_uV9AHn6V7mxT-O3NiJzBzT-8IjEgrSvA/s640/SherlockplaceCards.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The place cards were extra large to accommodate some embellishment pieces the bride was having made in Germany.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVKBVtmTbA_MEMPqodrsFIr109m2mA4YLFpq-l6P84Mj8gv-j1rY67M0AcCy84W3EzeuWWCJ7QA5uHWA8uBfExnDYXtYPfde4dEueT51DTgQDD98muPyz5QDOq5eHhi2nvayAD0jWFTIE/s1600/BluewithFlourishDetail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVKBVtmTbA_MEMPqodrsFIr109m2mA4YLFpq-l6P84Mj8gv-j1rY67M0AcCy84W3EzeuWWCJ7QA5uHWA8uBfExnDYXtYPfde4dEueT51DTgQDD98muPyz5QDOq5eHhi2nvayAD0jWFTIE/s320/BluewithFlourishDetail.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The above were the party invitation envelopes where we first used the bride's blue.<br />
<br />
The same week I made another sign - "Thank You" to be used for another bride's thank you notes.<br />

I love weddings! I love brides! I love brides' mothers! (And dads too.) Ten of us plus Bonnie gathered in Louisville for this fabulous workshop. Bonnie is an excellent instructor, and all the resulting books were stellar.<br />

<br />
I painted paste paper to use for my end sheets inside.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY7qN1IDQm8mE-nEdAqQ1JBJhyphenhyphen1kMJNjum6sKSTv9vVVBPVZXn-JewLlbUNmi-vazF-4tBn5vaHYjTKOfbz6bMScI6w_4Spel9YLEWRwods0N8UoPCfyB0GRNBQFdXDe8l6z4o9nVVLMc/s1600/BookClosure.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY7qN1IDQm8mE-nEdAqQ1JBJhyphenhyphen1kMJNjum6sKSTv9vVVBPVZXn-JewLlbUNmi-vazF-4tBn5vaHYjTKOfbz6bMScI6w_4Spel9YLEWRwods0N8UoPCfyB0GRNBQFdXDe8l6z4o9nVVLMc/s320/BookClosure.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The closure was wonderful...we wove a thin strip of leather in and out of itself and connected it via a jump ring to a tiny brass brad in the other leather clad wooden cover.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpS0q35uxYwrrruV8ehOzAzgKamZjpu6Zsf2Z-KlHXYRKVVyqz8HZbIdqD2Bvh58zns7kxNS2Ilbgrme0A8n05hc7HjTWhkmCZQsLlEJKYDmb7qjKkJcb3mi8gVeC9QhDftPUe28kNL6Y/s1600/allbooks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpS0q35uxYwrrruV8ehOzAzgKamZjpu6Zsf2Z-KlHXYRKVVyqz8HZbIdqD2Bvh58zns7kxNS2Ilbgrme0A8n05hc7HjTWhkmCZQsLlEJKYDmb7qjKkJcb3mi8gVeC9QhDftPUe28kNL6Y/s320/allbooks.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
All the participants had excellent results. The books are only about 3 x 5" but are packed with 12 signatures and bound with a modified coptic stitch so they will lay flat when opened.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If you ever get the opportunity to take a workshop from Bonnie, I am sure that you will enjoy it and you will learn a lot. <br />

A professor at a nearby university recently contacted me with an unusual request for certificate repair. She said there was a major problem with a certificate she wanted to have framed. I agreed to meet with her (no promises - you can never tell with a problem like this if it is repairable or not.) The problem with the certificate was that she was listed as an MD, but she is a PhD. She hoped that I could turn the MD into MS (because she was also
Master of Science) and add PhD behind it. I decided that the best I
could do was to camouflage the parts of the existing D with paint while
turning it into an S with black ink.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhffJw8Z2rapIpQ2yLrR9MRS90PnZ_NVJGoWnUDeVEDZdzFqGp4OjDpFssKyb5RRMXyzCOd0Socm_XXke7OSfaQCq_9VzHEoWNRoXcBGvbP6g-altUxTXlI1xqOVK4ThOM9-M3CdY6F0cg/s1600/Cert1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhffJw8Z2rapIpQ2yLrR9MRS90PnZ_NVJGoWnUDeVEDZdzFqGp4OjDpFssKyb5RRMXyzCOd0Socm_XXke7OSfaQCq_9VzHEoWNRoXcBGvbP6g-altUxTXlI1xqOVK4ThOM9-M3CdY6F0cg/s640/Cert1.jpg" width="640" /></a> <br />
<br />
<br />
The week long seminar she had attended was taught by people who meant a lot to her, and some were no longer available to sign a new certificate. She wanted to preserve the bit of history that their signatures provided. Also, the lettering was a style I seldom do, by a different, unknown calligrapher. I would have to attempt to match the lettering as closely as possible. Professor Z had contacted the CDC who issued the certificate, but they only advised her that they could re-issue one (with different signatures and with her name printed since they no longer use a calligrapher.) They advised her to try to find a good calligrapher who might be able to help. In a Google search, she found me, but when I saw the actual certificate I feared it would not have a good
result. The paper was not the best quality - thin and 'papery', not
conducive to scraping ink off well without tearing.) To top it all off,
the ink had smeared in one place - and I had no idea if I had any ink
that would match up since this was a decade old.<br />
<br />
Later as I began working on trying to eliminate the smeared parts around the M, I discovered that careful scraping was working. I was able to 'erase' the M pretty well. <br />

It's not a perfect result, but it's not bad. It's better than we had thought could be accomplished. The Ph had to be narrowed a bit to fit the M's slot, and there is some ink residue from the M and the original smearing. I was afraid to try to scrape it any more than I had, and I had erased with a typewriter eraser and a white eraser until no more ink could be removed. I think when she has it framed no one will notice the repair. She is thrilled to have saved this piece of her history, and I am happy to have made a new friend.</div>

Why not? They are a great quality paper, and it was a shame to not get more value from them. She asked me to make a guest book using leftover envelopes as the pages. Here are just a few of the envelopes to be cut into book pages.
<br/><br/>

I will share photos of the guest book as soon as I can after the wedding. I'm just cutting these pages today, and the wedding is next month.

I received an antique spelling book I'd ordered on ebay, a sweet thank you email from a bride who had just received her wedding envelopes and these two items: <br/><br/>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicPhYROpTsrRjFg0sU6GUi1wKVJdBc1RguTHfal6l_hhb4AiVukEaxpwPeOLC1DyIDbbEzrR7q4923rUxpQZt3cnCymWfNJk3P_lCjWdPnGrAbX-o43KlMKhzWRkInp9dZ0SdE_l1modQ/s1600/GoodMailDay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicPhYROpTsrRjFg0sU6GUi1wKVJdBc1RguTHfal6l_hhb4AiVukEaxpwPeOLC1DyIDbbEzrR7q4923rUxpQZt3cnCymWfNJk3P_lCjWdPnGrAbX-o43KlMKhzWRkInp9dZ0SdE_l1modQ/s640/GoodMailDay.jpg" /></a></div>
<br/><br/> The item on the left is a very sweet and thoughtful thank you note from one of my all time favorite brides. Her goodness and sweetness continue to impress me and make me happy to know her. The item on the right is an unexpected little gift from my BFF Diana - Schminke gold powder. A little treasure that I can mix with a binder to make golden ink, add to ink to make it shimmer, or use in my mixed media art. Diana knows what I like and what I need! <br/><br/> I love my friends, and I love my brides!<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-16490085396382042112013-08-17T13:22:00.000-04:002014-03-08T09:31:59.316-05:00New postcards and business cards!Because my internet server changed, I needed new postcards and business cards. There is something sad, not to mention wasteful, about throwing away so many now unusable business cards. I was happy for the opportunity to make a new postcard, however. What do you think? <br/><a data-pin-config="above" href="//pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fkentbrew%2F6851755809%2F&media=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7027%2F6851755809_df5b2051c9_z.jpg&description=Next%20stop%3A%20Pinterest" data-pin-do="buttonPin" ><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pin_it_button.png" /></a> <br/>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv0qoYrSHWHoU3PL7xp7EjkxlSClfBRuCiGCSNG75ofkcww4JemSLEiY1noPufgkdumn9mg0HDqvsx23KHS_tMABV3S5RNv0BlY0eCGCVO_J9VHvzAx8LQbNK-LI_W8JdjIQE1sL2H2uU/s1600/Postcard2Front2flat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv0qoYrSHWHoU3PL7xp7EjkxlSClfBRuCiGCSNG75ofkcww4JemSLEiY1noPufgkdumn9mg0HDqvsx23KHS_tMABV3S5RNv0BlY0eCGCVO_J9VHvzAx8LQbNK-LI_W8JdjIQE1sL2H2uU/s400/Postcard2Front2flat.jpg" /></a></div>
<br/><br/>
I used a photo of some silver envelopes addressed in my signature script, added a lavender background in Photoshop and popped my website address on the front.
<br/><br/>
My business card hasn't changed much. I added my new website address, removed a few lines of information that had it a bit cluttered, and changed the email address.

Met a client in front of the fairgrounds, and 2.) Picked up my fair tickets. As we waited for my client to arrive we saw these dragons on their way to the fair.
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8ueOkamSKG06bjRXHO6CH3xm9-tTEQ1EDkIN2OMCtQpymRdiKWYVZVHkc0TEQAdxcA5eGvMuX8ZWuIW1aVqugDV8epk3LsEb-OWb0J8-Hf6uy2wsG31kWXVyNGHZ6WYSmcxOJOSHChrk/s1600/DragonsGoingToTheFair.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8ueOkamSKG06bjRXHO6CH3xm9-tTEQ1EDkIN2OMCtQpymRdiKWYVZVHkc0TEQAdxcA5eGvMuX8ZWuIW1aVqugDV8epk3LsEb-OWb0J8-Hf6uy2wsG31kWXVyNGHZ6WYSmcxOJOSHChrk/s400/DragonsGoingToTheFair.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihvO-1yeHt-44k4tzPzy3aW7k_HqNDtl067pI1f7S0-Ue9vYTjmUhilRyZKWXO9YdnU3kHun-nDczCuPDJxX-0QN0MSnIr6GnC1Yr39-uL136mq6mq12CYq-Iupr_nTs2rI6IwAGhGHmY/s1600/DragonsAtPlay.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihvO-1yeHt-44k4tzPzy3aW7k_HqNDtl067pI1f7S0-Ue9vYTjmUhilRyZKWXO9YdnU3kHun-nDczCuPDJxX-0QN0MSnIr6GnC1Yr39-uL136mq6mq12CYq-Iupr_nTs2rI6IwAGhGHmY/s400/DragonsAtPlay.jpg" /></a> <br />
<br />
The sky looked ominous behind this ferris wheel. For good reason. Within minutes of our leaving the fairgrounds we were in a deluge with lightning striking all around.
<br />
<br />

<br />
I delivered this card and assorted other small pieces to the client. It was a pleasure to squeeze her little job in between two large ones, and a pleasure to meet her. (Please ignore the reflected raindrops from my windshield and the shadows.)

<br />It's been a very busy week. Along with an ER run last Monday night, I had a very large project to fulfill, and babysat for Jace a couple of times.
This envelope is a part of a large project that was picked up yesterday. I rarely do the staggered format, but this envelope was very large, and I think it looks great! (Address altered for privacy.)

<br/><br/>
Here is hoping we have fair weather for our visit to the Fair later this week, and no more ER visits for a very long time. I have too much to do!

<br />
<br />
Michael Clark, a former banker turned calligrapher and font designer, will be at Lettersong Gallery on October 10 and 11 to teach his "Going Beyond the Poem" workshop. Says Michael, “During the workshop we will be looking at the lettering styles you use with an eye toward trying variations of those forms, a way to expand our everyday styles. While we explore a variety of layouts and designs in each of the exercises, we will look at the effect that contrast, texture and color have on those designs. We will also experiment heavily with the ruling pen.”
<br />
<br />
Clark is a commercial lettering artist and type designer who resides in Glen Allen, Virginia. His lettering can be seen on packaging for products ranging from salad dressing to book and CD covers. He designs fonts for corporations, and for resale. He has written and had published several books and has been a frequent editor of the Washington DC Calligraphy Guild’s Scripsit magazine, which highlights calligraphers and lettering artists from around the world. In this role he has introduced many calligraphers to some of the world’s best lettering artists.
<br />
<br />
Lettersong Gallery is at Story and Spring Streets in the Butchertown area of Louisville. Although this workshop is sold out, you may contact Lettersong to be placed on a waiting list. Michael will give a talk about his work at Lettersong Gallery on Wednesday night, October 9th. It will be free and open to the public.
<br />
<br />
See Michael Clark’s work on his website: <a href="https://www.blogger.com/www.typerror.com">www.typerror.com</a>
<br />
<br />
"Until the banal SANS has blinded everyone with its sterility, there will always be a place for the hand wrought form. It infuses the word with life, vibrancy and the ability to sway the viewer." (MC)
<br />
<br />
This piece by Michael has an unusually steep slant to the lettering, which fits the purpose perfectly.

The groom is from Australia so the table name cards were names of various Australian cities written on the backs of beautiful Australian postcards. The table/escort cards were from the bride's hometown, Louisville KY. It was a nice way to meld and honor the two backgrounds.</br></br><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrOhnyu9L46VvqgVXBZ2WxuSTqi08eWiSHe3MK94m6j10fz-0e_fyRprgl7OPZsBw95gqrPzOeCvM9lXnLVpzKKQylzhRDyJ3__enOrjb6Bwx-9g-gfMgLppaz0qdqB-l6GcqiorgxGGE/s1600/TheresaTablecards4web.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrOhnyu9L46VvqgVXBZ2WxuSTqi08eWiSHe3MK94m6j10fz-0e_fyRprgl7OPZsBw95gqrPzOeCvM9lXnLVpzKKQylzhRDyJ3__enOrjb6Bwx-9g-gfMgLppaz0qdqB-l6GcqiorgxGGE/s400/TheresaTablecards4web.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXQv6nW94yr7ehPR9_ejMFC8iahO3DWAt4mMrHb6RJuSFdcqXgAJiUaNAALgQ2VZrrRdgNMerZ8CZI0lpebL-8I2fHyH3mBbLKXCGfplKkqKgyQ9jcoWwEsWtGYr7rwpuk5hHlitTcHGo/s1600/TheresaTableNameCards4web.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXQv6nW94yr7ehPR9_ejMFC8iahO3DWAt4mMrHb6RJuSFdcqXgAJiUaNAALgQ2VZrrRdgNMerZ8CZI0lpebL-8I2fHyH3mBbLKXCGfplKkqKgyQ9jcoWwEsWtGYr7rwpuk5hHlitTcHGo/s400/TheresaTableNameCards4web.jpg" /></a></br>
</br> In addition to these, I also lettered quite a few envelopes this month. Here are a couple of personal ones, done in navy blue on a slant on green envelopes. Slanting the addresses has been pretty popular lately - so has navy blue ink!</br></br>Lastly, here's a personalized photo mat I did as a small gift for a bride and groom with their married name and wedding date. I told the bride that her groom will have no excuses for missing their anniversary. : )</br></br>

I enjoy working with brides, newlyweds (both grooms and brides), Mothers of the Bride, hostesses, friends. It's happy work, as most of my work involves commemorating in calligraphy, a milestone, a special event or feeling. Here are some of my recent projects.
These were fun envelopes to do. One lovely bride wanted something a little different and we selected a slanted address layout in a traditional hand-lettered script style of lettering. <br/><a data-pin-config="above" href="//pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fkentbrew%2F6851755809%2F&media=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7027%2F6851755809_df5b2051c9_z.jpg&description=Next%20stop%3A%20Pinterest" data-pin-do="buttonPin" ><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pin_it_button.png" /></a>

A happy young man had me letter this photo mat for his wife for Mother's Day. I used a version of my traditional wedding script calligraphy. I love what I do! In between busy times like these, I try to attend workshops which ignite my creativity, deepen friendships and further my calligraphic education. I remain forever grateful that I took that first calligraphy class so many years ago. <br/><br/><br/>

COMMENT RESPONSES: Sorry, I have been unable to respond to messages. Christy, thank you very much! Marjorie, thank you. No, I don't do a pencil rough first. Instead I use a guideline on a light board so I will have proper placement. I still have to 'eyeball' correct placement width wise, but the writing line is set.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-87681295018659624262013-06-19T17:05:00.001-04:002014-01-07T10:48:09.317-05:00Louisville Workshops! Take your pick, or take all three! <br />
These three extraordinary workshops are coming to Louisville this Fall. <br />
On September 7 and 8 Bonnie Stahlecker, fabulous teacher of the book arts, will be teaching us how to make the leather covered book pictured above in her class entitled "Byzantine Sewing with Leather Covered Boards." We will be making a wonderful book with decorated hard leather covers. She is the most well organized instructor I have ever had! If you like books, this workshop will be a 'don't miss'!<br />
Just a month later Michael Clark, calligrapher extraordinaire, will be here to teach a shortened version of his "Going Beyond the Poem" workshop. It is about design and refining letterforms. He will also demo the ruling pen that he wields so expertly and we will design a clock! (Google Michael to see some he has made.) So cool! Here's more about this workshop in particular. <br />
Michael Clark: Going Beyond the Poem
Level: Intermediate <br />
This workshop will explore the calligraphic possibilities of the illustrative word as opposed to our standard forms, the ones we use day to day. The focus will be on “writing” and design that goes beyond the simply laid out text (such as poems or testimonials) used in our bread and butter work. Employing our chisel edged pens, brushes, ruling pens, Speedball B’s etc. (or tool of your choice), we will pursue several projects over two days (a Thursday and a Friday) : a piece of letter art (designing with a quote), a logo (personal or imagined), a functional clock (I will provide the clock mechanisms for $11.00 so that you can take it home in working order). During the workshop we will be looking at the lettering styles you use with an eye toward trying variations of those forms, a way to expand our everyday styles. While we explore a variety of layouts and designs in each of the exercises, we will look at the effect that contrast, texture and color have on those designs.
We will also experiment heavily with the ruling pen.
About his October workshop, Michael says, "There is a lot of room to move within these guidelines. I want to give everybody what they need in this class. But I do not want to waste a second. SO, come prepared to work your fannies off and have some fun."<br />
Last, but not least, artist/calligrapher Jacqueline Sullivan of Lake Orion MI will be teaching Visual Poetry, calligraphy on canvas. Her workshop will be October 19 and 20. Jacqueline is a Golden representative and she knows acrylic mediums! You may own one of her instructional DVDs. I've known Jacqueline for years, have taken workshops from her, and can just about guarantee that this will be a wonderful workshop!
Contact me about any of these workshops. Space is limited, but still available for all three of these fabulous opportunities. We are keeping the prices as low as possible - maybe you can come to all three!<br />

I'd seen a Facebook post where she'd casually offered to send one to others who liked the one she posted. I took her up on it. It is a stunner with colors transitioning between the letters. I love it! Thank you again, Anne! (Anne teaches workshops at Bookbinders in Atlanta, and besides her excellent calligraphy, she makes beautiful books. <br/>

I loved getting this happiness in my mailbox.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnkikGD8YvNkp5OrWUxV6EH9703Yd5HAaqpsBosQJ_ca8h_FEG8zlYD1W_tFrwr7_QNGjxGhupKDDqMlTznQFv0yWqGgwPRE1MAtV9YFa8YJY3HPr1eq_AAkbwuh8iatB4af8MP_3WVBc/s1600/DianaJan.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnkikGD8YvNkp5OrWUxV6EH9703Yd5HAaqpsBosQJ_ca8h_FEG8zlYD1W_tFrwr7_QNGjxGhupKDDqMlTznQFv0yWqGgwPRE1MAtV9YFa8YJY3HPr1eq_AAkbwuh8iatB4af8MP_3WVBc/s320/DianaJan.jpg" /></a><br/> <br/>Heather Lee sent this spring green beauty with lush black letters that look like velvet. The letters make you want to touch them to feel the pile, but of course there is none. Note the neat ligature between the H, U and R! Apparently her illustrations are well known among our friends, but this is the first time I'd seen one. We worked full time, were wives and mothers and were even busier then than now. I don't know how we did it. I rarely send a pretty envelope for myself these days. I spend my days lettering wedding envelopes for others, but they're so much fun to receive I am going to have to send more, more often.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Also see my wedding calligraphy blog at www.weddingletterlady.blogspot.com</div>letterladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133983590494020592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2830236232286909244.post-59282581566140568442013-05-31T10:58:00.001-04:002013-05-31T11:11:06.299-04:00Bonnie Stahlecker LongingsMary Lou Sherman, Jen Grove and I drove to Indianapolis recently for a talk by artist friend, Bonnie Stahlecker about her <a href="http://www.bonnie-stahlecker.com/artwork/sculpture/personal-shields/?logout=1">wall sculptures exhibit, Longings</a>.
The exhibit is great and will be up through today if you are in the area. It is at Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indiana on Pennsylvania Street.<br/>

I am so glad we went to hear Bonnie speak about her works and her transition from books to these sculptures. In addition to the talk, in the vestibule we were able to view a very nice video showing some of her process. The pieces on display were all a part of her Protection series. She researched words and actions and feelings people have across the world and across time about protection. The result is a very symbolic and very thoughtful body of work that filled the gallery walls beautifully.
<br/>
Jen took this photo of Bonnie at the start of her talk. She is holding a small book she made and telling that usually in book exhibits we can only see front and back covers and spine or one opened pair of pages. This led to her wanting to create more sculptural works. She now translates her love of the book and its leather, fibers, printing and papers in a whole new way.

Please click on the link near the top of this post to see more of Bonnie's fascinating works. Bonnie also makes and teaches (often in her <a href="http://www.bonnie-stahlecker.com/info/">Blue Lizard Studio</a>) how to make wonderful book forms, both traditional and non-traditional. She may be teaching how to make leather bound books at Jen's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/LetterSong-Calligraphy-StudioGallery/">Lettersong Studio/Gallery</a> in September.<br/><br/><br/><br/>By Jan Hurst
